I loved this movie! "Biiiig gopher."

Apparently Dave Stevens ended up really bitter about it for some reason (even though AIUI he actually had a lot of input during the production).

It kind of was tailor-made for Carrey, really. They changed a lot of stuff around for the movie to make it a Jim Carrey vehicle; the original comics were considerably darker. Lt. Kellerman is actually more the central character of the comics, while Ipkiss only has the mask fairly briefly, long enough to get revenge on the crooked mechanics (which is much gorier: in the comics, the Mask's cartoon powers do not extend to cartoonish effects on other people—ramming an exhaust pipe all the way up somebody's rectum does exactly what it would actually do) before losing it in a (in a mugging IIRC) when he has it off. After the movie came out, though, later comic series were lighter to match.

It never turned into a franchise because it was SO much a Jim Carrey vehicle, and he'd only signed on for one.

I am working on it. Normally I wouldn't be involved, but this problem requires rewriting the core code of Webcomics Nation, which I wrote, so I had to step in. Hopefully will have this solved by the end of the day. I just made a major breakthrough that shows me a way to fix it -- will still take time to implement this change. If not today, sometime early tomorrow morning. I'll be up and coding until it's done.

I think you hit it dead on in terms of the real injustices going on out there. Last week I made a donation to Tony DeZuniga who needs assistance. But this series does raise some valid points: How much control should the comic company have over the creations it publishes? They did assume the financial risks for something that, could quite frankly, have flopped. After all, none of us would be as livid if they decided to give Void Indigo another shot. Should the creator have the final say in how other people spend their money? Let's be honest, could ANYONE really keep Alan Moore happy? I guess I've got more questions than answers right now. I don't think this is a non-issue, but I don't think it's a big one. I'm not going to buy this because I'm not buying those types of comics right now.
